Who is Dr Shini’chi Suzuki?
“If a child hears fine music from the day of his birth and learns to play it himself, he develops sensitivity, discipline and endurance. He gets a beautiful heart”
Suzuki was a skilled Japanese violinist who lived in Germany during his twenties under the guardianship of Albert Einstein.
He was fascinated how young children could speak this difficult language so fluently and reasoned that if a child has the skill of learning a difficult language then they have the ability to become proficient in a musical instrument.
He pioneered that pre-school children could learn to play the violin and believed every child if taught properly was capable of a high level of musical achievement.
The philosophy
“All children have talent”
Environment rather than genetic background determines the success or failure of a student.
Starting children from pre-school age and learning music by ear so that the child absorbs music it naturally.
Suzuki also believed that as very child learns his native tongue in the first few years of life by listening to and imitating his parents’ voice so the parent can be a wonderful home teacher for music.
‘Talent, is no accident of birth’
The Curriculum
“The fate of every child is in the hands of the parents”
Small simple steps and repetition of each technique to be studied which makes it really easy for everyone.
Positive reinforcement enables every child to learn.
From Twinkle Twinkle to two highly acclaimed Mozart Concertos.
The Technique
“Primary education is everything for Talent Education”
Here are some bullet points on the technique Suzuki used to create amazing musicians:
-
Weekly individual lessons
-
Periodic group lesson to play, motivate and have fun
-
A home teacher to guide the child
-
Practise, practise
-
A CD of music to ensure every child learns
